Citroën Ami review

The Citroën Ami shouldn’t really be coming to the UK but, thanks to some lobbying behind the scenes, the little quadricycle is about to arrive in British showrooms. Its price - £7,695 for the most basic model - and the combination of having two seats and battery power means it can’t avoid being compared to the Renault Twizy, with both vehicles enjoying loyal support from their respective fans. On paper, the Ami hardly looks like a sensible buy, offering less than 50 miles of range and a 28mph top speed, but around 2.500 potential buyers put down a deposit without even seeing an Ami and so there seems to be a market, albeit small, for the little French box-on-wheels in the UK.

We were offered the chance to try one for ourselves around the streets of Cardiff and found a suitably-wrapped Ami waiting for us outside the new BBC Wales building in the very heart of the city. It’s tiny, with just enough room for two adults and possibly a backpack inside, while plastic is the material of choice to keep the build costs down.

Take a look at our exclusive video to see what we thought of our brief encounter with the Citroën Ami.

Together with the chance to experience an Ami for ourselves, we also got the opportunity to talk to Eurig Druce, the Managing Director of Citroën UK, about the vehicle, why it wasn’t really an option to introduce a version with a longer range and higher top speed and the various methods of ownership (including a £19.99 per month PCP and potential use by car clubs).
