Vehicle on test

Renault Clio

Good:

Performance, handling, styling

Not so Good:

Uncomfortable seats

Overall:

This Clio supercedes the Renaultsport 172 and 182 models. And it’s the fastest small car to come from Renault to date.

Powered by a normally aspirated 2.0 litre 16 valve engine this £15,995 three door zooms from 0-62 in just under seven seconds and produces an inspirational engine noise as it goes. A potential top speed of 134mph should leave most small cars standing.

Handling is a delight and the 197 remains glued to the road even in the tightest of corners. And the ride, though firm and sporty, is not harsh or uncomfortable - it’s quiet enough to carry on a normal conversation.

Initially we found the clutch a bit heavy but after a couple of days adjusted to it’s very positive feel. Uprated brakes are comfortingly efficient but not harsh and slick and positive changes are provided by the six speed close ratio box.

This car doesn’t scream racer at you. It’s pretty and understated - no spoilers or widely flared arches. The only giveaway is the Renaultsport boot badge and a diffuser straight from the Formula One paddock which gives the little hatch its adhesive quality. Concealed under the boot and a bit like an extended bumper, this downforce generator, negates the need for an ugly spoiler and is far more efficient at securing stability.

Air vents on the front wings, which reduce turbulence and improve performance, are a bit of a clue too.

Despite the Recaro seats not being the most comfortable we agreed we haven’t had so much fun since we drove a Clio Williams along the winding backroads of Wales. This car is a cracker.
